Fantasy, science fiction, and horror are wonderful genres, and they deserve to be written and edited with just as much care as so-called literary fiction. And I want to help.
Now, I'm not the end-all, be-all, know-it-all of writing, in fact when it comes to writing speculative fiction I'm a newbie, but I do have almost twenty years of writing and editing for magazines under my belt. And in that time I've learned one or two things that I'd like to share.
I've started this blog to write about writing, post a few select spec fic stories (some mine, some not), and offer free, yes free, editing. This is an open invitation for you to send me your stories of up to 3,500 words, preferably speculative fiction, and every week I'll choose one to edit. In return for my free editing service, you give me the right to post excerpts of your story to illustrate particular points about writing and editing. Unless I have specific permission to do otherwise, I'll only post excerpts, so your story will remain unpublished and lose no value. In fact, it will gain value because I guarantee it will be better (if nothing else, better punctuated) when I'm finished with it.
Send your stories as Microsoft Word .doc attachments (not .docx) to: pleaseeditmystory@gmail.com.
Oh, one more thing: if I do post stories in their entirety, they will most likely be password protected. Once again, this is to keep them from becoming "published" and costing the authors (including me!) money on future sales. If you would like the password, just send a request to the same address.
Now let's get busy and become better writers!
